Case 1: Wrong number 17 taken

Mean = 20

Total no. of numbers = 8

Sum of the numbers = 20*8 = 160

Case 2: Removing wrong number 17 from mean

Wrong sum of the numbers = 160

Subtract wrong num 17 and add correct number 25

Correct sum = 160 – 17 + 25 = 168

No. of numbers = 8 (same)

Correct mean = Correct sum/ no. of numbers

or, Mean = 168/8

or, Mean = 21
